Things to Do in Uncasville, CT

gambling in Uncasville ct

For most visitors, Uncasville means one thing: Mohegan Sun. The casino rises out of the woods along the Thames River in southeastern Connecticut, and it draws nearly everyone who comes here. But the town sits in the Mystic region, within a short drive of a state park, one of the oldest Native-run museums in the country, and a stretch of coast worth a full day on its own. If you’re coming for the casino and wondering what else is around, there’s more than the highway signs let on.

Uncasville is a village inside the town of Montville, named for Uncas, the Mohegan sachem who led the tribe in the 1600s. The Mohegan Tribe gained federal recognition in 1994 and opened Mohegan Sun two years later on its own land. That history is the thread running through the area, and it’s the reason the most interesting things to do here have nothing to do with the gaming floor.

The casino is a short drive from other popular towns in the region. It is a 15-minute drive to the quaint coastal town of Mystic, about 20 minutes from New London, 45 minutes from New London, and about a 2.5-hour drive from New York and Boston. It is conveniently located near the I-395. Looking for other casino getaways? See our guide to small town casino destinations across the U.S.

Mohegan Sun

The casino is the anchor, and it earns the traffic. Two gaming floors, an arena that books national acts and the Connecticut Sun of the WNBA, a spa, and a shopping concourse built around a Dale Chihuly glass sculpture. You can spend a weekend without leaving the property, and plenty of people do. The Mohegan Sun website has current hours, show schedules, and room availability. What follows is for the other half of the trip.

Things to Do in Uncasville Beyond the Casino

Fort Shantok

Fort Shantok is just south of the casino, on a rise above the Thames. This state park and National Historic Landmark holds the Mohegan burial ground and the site of a 17th-century fortified village. The trails are short but steep in places, and the ground here matters to the tribe, so it’s a quiet walk rather than a recreation area. Twenty minutes from the slot machines, it’s about as different as the area gets.

The Tantaquidgeon Museum

The Tantaquidgeon Museum was founded in 1931 by John Tantaquidgeon and some of his children. One of the oldest Native-owned and operated museums in the United States and this region, it offers a smaller collection of artifacts and exhibits related to Mohegan history, craft, art, and other artifacts. A great place to learn a lot more about the people and how they thrived in the region.

The Thames riverfront

The Thames riverfront is a public park on the river just below the casino, with walking trails and long views back toward the water. If the casino floor gets to be too much, it’s an easy, free place to reset.

Nature’s Art Village

This is a quirky stop on the way in and out of the area. Nature’s. The village is a collection of shops, complete with life-size dinosaur models, with trails leading to each exhibit. The Dinosaur Place has outdoor trails lined with life-size models, a splash pad in summer, and a gem-mining setup that keeps younger kids busy. Definitely a tourist destination, so ot for everyone, but if you’re traveling with children, it’s the obvious answer to a rainy afternoon.

Day Trips from Uncasville

The town’s real advantage is what surrounds it. Uncasville makes a good base because the Mystic region is dense with places worth a half-day.

Mystic is twenty minutes southeast and the strongest draw. The Mystic Seaport Museum is the largest maritime museum in the country, with historic ships you can board and a recreated 19th-century coastal village. The Mystic Aquarium is a short distance away. The downtown is walkable, built around a drawbridge over the Mystic River, and it’s a good place to eat.

New London is fifteen minutes south on the coast, with a working waterfront, the Garde Arts Center, and the Amtrak station that makes the whole area reachable without a car. Norwich, just north, has colonial architecture and a riverfront. And there are several vineyards within a short drive, a quieter New England afternoon if the casino isn’t the whole reason you came.

For a second casino, Foxwoods sits about twenty minutes east in Mashantucket — the two Connecticut resorts are close enough to see both in a weekend.

Visiting Uncasville Without Gambling

There are lots of things to do that are not gambling-related. The property has a variety of restaurants, a concert and entertainment venue, a spa, and shops. Some of the popular nearby attractions and things to do include Fort Shantok, the Tantaquidgeon Museum, and a day in Mystic, and you have a full weekend that never touches the casino floor.

Some of the restaurants and eateries include The Farm Italy – an Italian Ballo-themed rustic Italian-style restaurant, Michael Jordan’s Steak House, offering upscale American dining, seafood and, of course, a large wine list with many fine wines from around the world. TAO Asian Bistro and Lounge is an asian themed eatery. Other restaurants include the Hash House, serving comfort food, and Frank Pepe Pizzeria Napoletana, famous for New Haven-style pizza.

The arena and entertainment venues at the Casino attract some major activities and events, including national headline concert tours, the occasional WNBA games, Bellator and UFC events, well-known comedy tours, and poker tournaments. Yeah, I know poker is gambling, but some people view poker tournaments as a show and a form of entertainment.

What is Uncasville, Connecticut known for?

Uncasville is home to Mohegan Sun, one of the largest casino resorts in the country, run by the Mohegan Tribe. Beyond the casino floor, the resort includes concert venues, a spa, and shopping, making the town a destination in its own right rather than a stopover.

Is Uncasville the same as Mohegan Sun?

Not quite. Uncasville is the town; Mohegan Sun is the resort within it. Most visitors are coming specifically for the casino and its attached hotel towers, so the two names are often used interchangeably, but Uncasville itself extends beyond the resort property.

How far is Uncasville from Foxwoods Casino?

About 15 minutes by car. Foxwoods, in nearby Mashantucket, is Mohegan Sun’s direct competitor, and many visitors base themselves in the area and visit both casinos during the same trip.

How do I get to Uncasville without a car?

Mohegan Sun runs its own bus service from several Northeast cities, including New York and Boston, directly to the resort. For visitors without a car, this is the most common way in — the resort itself is set up for guests who arrive and stay on-site for the length of the trip.

Is Uncasville worth visiting if you don’t gamble?

Yes. Mohegan Sun’s concert arena books major touring acts, and the resort includes a spa, several shopping concourses, and a range of dining beyond what a typical casino floor offers. It functions as a resort destination for a broader trip than gambling alone.
